Juliette was not sure she wanted to come and live in this residential suburb of Paris. The women here have all quarantine, children to raise, maintain homes and husbands who come home late at night.

This great retrospective at the Centre Georges Pompidou showcases the genius of Roy Lichtenstein (1923/1997), considered to be one of the stars of the pop movement, a grand master of American painting. Its production inspired by the popular imagery is omni directional: advertising in comic strips, drawings collages. Beaubourg presents  140 works. Some for the first time in France.

At the forefront of the pop art, Lichtenstein however goes far beyond. Postmodern but also at the end of his life Almost a painter of tradition. His art, it is first and foremost an amused distance, critical without ever becoming cynical, that it has exercised both on itself and on the painting.
“Are you sure you have never created a work absolutely devoid of the slightest trace of malice, of humour or irony?, question from a journalist.” But already in 1972, he exclaimed: “what you can properly paint that is not absolutely ridiculous?”…
